Advanced Line Locator

Every day line locators across Canada and the US work with a complex underground infrastructure. They are frequently faced with significant obstacles and challenges that negatively impact the quality of locates. Safe excavation projects require accuracy and planning.

Line locators require crucial skills and knowledge to accurately locate, mark, identify and document buried facilities in a safe and effective manner. Whether a billion-dollar construction site, or a backyard home renovation, it is essential that line locators are competent to perform all necessary tasks in order to ensure a safe ground disturbance project.

Developing Qualified Line Locators

SAIT Polytechnic now offers the Advanced Line Locator Certificate Program. This new and unique online program provides in-depth and extensive detail regarding line locating specific to industry sectors, ensuring the well-rounded knowledge of the locators working in those sectors.

The Program is designed to enhance worker safety, public safety, protection of the environment and the integrity of the underground infrastructure.

Developed with input from subject matter experts, educators and stakeholders such as CGA (Common Ground Alliance), ABCGA (Alberta Common Ground Alliance), Alberta One-Call, CAPULC (Canadian Association of Pipeline and Utility Locating Contractors) and other industry professionals, this Certificate Program provides extensive and comprehensive training using the latest technologies required for line locators to exceed industry expectations and excel in their field.

Program Details

The Advanced Line Locator Certificate Program consists of nine required courses and an additional optional course. All these courses are accessible in an online format*:

*Note:Our Prints & Technology, Electric Power and Transmission Pipelines are currently available online. The following two courses—Gas Distribution, and Telecommunications will be available online for registration starting March 2012. Our Safe Digging for Excavation, Construction and Ground Disturbance course is equivalent to Ground Disturbance Level II and will be available online for registration starting January 15, 2012.
