SAIT Polytechnic is a Foundation™ Certified Solution Provider. Since 2000, our Foundation™ fieldbus Certified Professional program has been helping managers, engineers and technicians worldwide realize the potential of Foundation fieldbus technology.

World-class Instruction

Ian Verhappen, P. Eng. is one of the world’s foremost experts on Foundation™ fieldbus. He has authored numerous technical papers on the subject of Fieldbus and is a regular columnist for several industry trade journals. As past chairman of the Western Canada End User Council, past chairman of the Fieldbus Foundation Global End User Advisory Council, and active on a number of Fieldbus specification committees, Mr. Verhappen has been instrumental in setting the direction of Fieldbus technology. Verhappen has served as engineer/designer or external /cold eyes review consultant and project lead for a number of companies and industries around the world.

State-of-the-Art Fieldbus Lab Facilities

Reflecting the most up-to-date standards in the industry, SAIT recently upgraded its Foundation fieldbus lab to incorporate Foundation HSE technology. Our updated laboratory demonstrates Fieldbus instruments’ interoperability from over a dozen different manufacturers. In addition to the National Instruments Host used for the majority of our laboratory exercises, SAIT also has Host systems from Honeywell Experion, Yokogawa CENTUM, Smar System302, and Emerson DeltaV, thus providing learners with exposure to a diverse and comprehensive Fieldbus experience.

SAIT’s Fieldbus lab facility provides each learner with his/her own training station and includes four Foundation fieldbus devices from four different manufacturers. More than 20 different manufacturers of Fieldbus equipment are represented in the lab.

Foundation™ fieldbus Certified Professional Program

SAIT Polytechnic offers the five-day Foundation™ fieldbus Certified Professional program which is intended for engineers, technologists, system integrators, EPC professionals and others who require comprehensive training in the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of Foundation fieldbus systems.

This program presents theory and lab exercises in order to gain practical knowledge. Participants receive Foundation Certified Professional Certification upon successful completion of this program. See our program description below. See our Course Finder for upcoming delivery dates of the program.

Day 1: Foundation™ fieldbus Essentials

The first day provides an overall introduction to Fieldbus technology.
Topics include an introduction to:
  • Fieldbus Foundation™ principles and procedures
  • Fieldbus foundation life cycle economics
  • Foundation™ fieldbus technology
  • Foundation fieldbus wiring and installation
  • Foundation fieldbus device communications
  • Foundation fieldbus communication models
  • Foundation fieldbus user layer

A short exam will be given at the end of the first class to verify learner comprehension of materials presented to date.

Day 2 to Day 5: Foundation™ fieldbus Certified

Starting on Day 2, learners are presented with theory and laboratory exercises demonstrating the Foundation™ fieldbus protocol and its implementation. As the course progresses through the week, participants gain comprehensive understanding in advanced topics of design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of Foundation fieldbus systems. Theory and laboratory exercises will reinforce outcomes with a focus on detailed specifications for system components, installation considerations, documentation techniques, and hands-on applications.

Topics covered on Day 2 to Day 5 include:

  • Fundamentals of Foundation fieldbus technology
  • Differences and similarities between Foundation fieldbus and other technologies
  • Diagnostic tools used for analyzing digital communications
  • Configuration and interface settings for a Foundation fieldbus network
  • Foundation fieldbus operation using a generic host
  • Use of the capabilities file and off line configuration
  • Foundation fieldbus system design and installation
  • Foundation fieldbus device description files
  • Risk management
  • Host selection
  • Conformance and acceptance testing
  • Project documentation
  • Commissioning of Foundation fieldbus systems
  • Maintaining Foundation fieldbus systems

Assignments will be issued for each topic and a short exam will be given at the end of this last section to verify learner comprehension of materials presented. It is recommended that participants bring a calculator to aid completion of assignments.
