Workforce Development for Indigenous Communities
SAIT can partner with your Indigenous community to customize training to your community-specific needs for today and the future.
Delivering In-Community Training for More than 20 Years
For more than two decades, SAIT has learned about the specific training requirements of Indigenous communities and the organizations that work with them. In our work with Indigenous communities in Alberta, we have developed a long-term commitment to serving their needs right at home by delivering quality training programs to strengthen foundational skills and build on those with hands-on skills for meaningful employment in the Canadian labour market.
Creating a Supportive and Engaging Learning Experience
Our experience has taught us that the key to a successful in-community training program is in the creation of a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment. We do this firstly by assessing upfront the needs of our client communities and their learners and working to jointly agree on learning outcomes and objectives of training initiatives. Secondly, together we address and incorporate important community-specific culture and tradition into training program design and delivery. Thirdly, we employ the right SAIT instructors, subject matter specialists and support staff who are experienced in teaching, working and building positive relationships with Indigenous learners and in Indigenous communities.
Building Skills for a Sustainable Future
Many of our construction-related training initiatives in-community implement hands-on legacy projects such as the new building construction and renovation/remediation of community buildings. We have worked with Indigenous to complete projects such as schools and trades training centre facilities, daycare centres, elders’ lodges, and human resource development buildings. For those participants in business and technology-focused training programs, hands-on skills are applied to community activities such as cooking meals for elders, catering and planning traditional events. Our supervisory training for the hotel and hospitality industry has provided Indigenous participants with the skills to progress and grow into supervisory/management roles in an on-site resort and casino.
