Summer student field safety

Train tour short-term hires to work safely

SAIT's popular summer student field safety training program is a great way to not only train your hires on summer break from university but also to eventually recruit them and retain them longer-term.

Delivered on SAIT campus, this comprehensive oilfield safety training program is industry-recognized and provides a quick and convenient, one-stop approach to standardized oilfield safety training and certification for oil and gas companies.

Training and Certification

Our oilfield safety training package includes instructor-led and online training, certification/tickets, take-away training materials, and daily refreshments. The following courses are included in the training program, and are typically delivered over a six-day period:

  • Confined Space Entry This eight-hour course will provide participants with knowledge and skill on how to work safely in a confined space. In addition to a classroom session which discusses the theory of proper confined space work, participants will also perform a series of practical exercises using our confined space training vessel. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certification card.
  • H2S Alive This course follows the Alberta Petroleum Industry Training Services (Enform) standards and will be led by a certified H2S Alive instructor. Participants will acquire knowledge through a number of case studies, actively testing H2S and setting up and using emergency breathing apparatuses for rescue. Participants will be issued an H2S Alive certification card upon successful completion of this eight-hour course.
  • Safe Driving This 10-hour course (six hours defensive driving in-class instruction and four hours in-vehicle) specially designed to meet the needs of participants who will be working out in the field.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR This course is though the Canadian Red Cross. This 16-hour Alberta-based course is spread out over two consecutive days and includes CPR Level C skills and certification. The course provides comprehensive First Aid and CPR techniques for those who need training for work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the workplace or home.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) This four-hour course will equip participants to describe the classification system, documentation, labeling, placarding, training requirements, recognition, and incident reporting of dangerous goods. A certification card for classes 2-6, 8 and 9 for road transport will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) online This four-hour course will provide information to participants about the classification system, the labels used by suppliers and workplaces, and the contents and significance of the information on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). A certification card will be issued upon successful completion of this course.
  • Ground Disturbance This four-hour course is designed for personnel who are involved with a ground disturbance operation. The course will cover the various rules, regulations and procedures that are pertinent for ground disturbance work. A certification card will be issued upon successful completion of this course.

Note: A four-hour course in Ground Disturbance is available upon request for an additional cost. We also offer orientation and teambuilding packages—a great way to welcome your new hires to your organization.
